History Lucerne as named by a lady from Switzerland in June,
1903, because she thought it resembled the lake of that name at her home. The former mining town contained several cabins used for housing the minors. There was also a dance hall, schoolhouse, tavern and resort at one time. Holden Lucerne served as a base camp for Holden Copper Mine, located a few short miles up the hillside, from 1896 to 1957 when the mine closed after metal prices plummeted at the end of WWII. Holden Village, as it is now called, is owned by the Lutheran Church and serves as a retreat and as tourist destination for people of all faiths. The Getty's Lucerne & the LCBC
